With plenty of things to do on St Kitts and Nevis, discover what’s on offer on land for some fascinating days out
With enough natural beauty to make your eyes sore, visitors will want to get out and about to enjoy the delights the islands have to offer. With swimming and sunbathing always a great option, if you fancy exploring the island, you won’t be disappointed with the myriad of places to visit and things to do. Hike rainforest trails, bike ride around the island perimeter taking in the lagoons and marvel at the quaint streets littered with stunning colonial architecture.
Exploring St Kitts And Nevis
Start in the capital Basseterre where you’ll find the beautiful St George’s Anglican Church, which was first built as Notre Dame Catholic Church in 1670 and the Co-cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Make sure you swing by the plaza-style Independence Square which dates back to 1790 and surrounds a central fountain, with trees and flowers blooming around it. And if you really want to brush up on your island history, you’ll also find the National Museum of St Kitts in Basseterre, which tells its interesting story. Take a trip on the super-quaint scenic railway that takes a 30km circular route on a three-hour tour of the island. Heading out of the wonderfully named NeedsMust Station, you’ll chug out through the sugar cane fields, along the slopes of Mount Liamuiga and across some pretty deep ravines via the steel girder bridges, whilst enjoying the sites of old churches and fortresses. The Wingfield-Phillips Rainforest Nature Trail is a nice stroll to take, where you’ll come across tree frogs, plenty of flora and fauna indigenous to the Caribbean and gorgeous open pastures, as well as thick canopies of ancient trees. Hire a bike from a resort, pack a picnic and head out on two wheels to see the island up close and personal. Beyond Basseterre, be warned, the terrain can get pretty steep, but make sure you take a spin around the Circus roundabout in the capital, that was modelled on London’s Picadilly Circus and features the Berkeley Memorial Clock on top.
